Money Mindset Tip: Are You Minding Your Own Business?

money mindset tip minding your own business

In my first year of business, I panicked.

Worried about money and doubting whether I could make it as a business owner, I took a gig working for another career coach.

The good news: I coached a lot of people.

The bad news: I was vastly underpaid.

The worst news: For almost six months, I put my time, energy, and creativity into growing someone else’s business instead of my own.

I had violated one of the most important “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” money mindset tips: I wasn’t minding my own business.

Robert Kiyosaki’s concept applies to EVERYONE, not just business owners.

It boils down to a simple question: Are you minding your own business, or someone else’s?

If you’re not investing the bulk of your time and energy into furthering YOUR goals, you’re furthering someone else’s.

And most people spend their careers doing it.

Think about all the ways you get distracted with other people’s business:

  • Perfecting that deliverable that you know doesn’t align with the work that feels best and most natural to you

  • That co-worker that always seem to lure you into fixing his mess

  • That boss who constantly interrupts you and manages everything like a fire drill

  • That family member who brings problems (and emotional labor) to your doorstep

  • That client who DOESN’T PAY on time, yet emails and calls constantly

Here’s one for you…how much time and energy do you spend consuming versus creating—from food to clothes to other people’s content?

Notice how much EASIER it is to focus on other people’s business than your own?!

And notice how all that consumption literally grows someone else’s business?

Imagine retraining that time and energy on your career goals.

Minding other people’s business can also be a form of procrastination.

I notice that when I start getting all up in my mom’s finances or home improvement ideas or whatever…it’s a clue that I need to get my own house in order.

Do you hear this energy?

It’s focused on fixing and doing.

But on the WRONG stuff.

Minding other people’s business hoovers up your time and energy, so there’s none left for the real work that will propel you toward what you want for yourself.

One of my coachees is CRUSHING this transition—moving away from fixing other people’s business, literally and figuratively.

All her energy was going to other people—family obligations, a particularly toxic client, even her business model had deviated from the passive income machine she wanted to the time-intensive business consulting she didn’t.

As a result of minding her own business, she’s transforming not only her business but her personal relationships. She recently remarked, “I’m ready to shift my thinking from what’s ‘right’ out there to what’s ‘right for me.’”

So, my friend, your turn…

What would it look like if you implemented this money mindset tip and fully committed to minding your own business?
