Happy New Year!!

I'm not a big fan of new year's resolutions.

They put a ton of pressure on an arbitrary day of the year, and there's a mountain of evidence that they don't work.

Yet year after year, people pin their dreams on next year.

Maybe for you it's after the next bonus cycle. Maybe it's once the kids are off to college...then once the kids are done with college. Maybe it's once you turn 30, or 40, or 60.

We all have those big milestone markers that we think will finally give us the freedom to go after what we really want in our career.

Without clear intention and a sound strategy, the markers come and go, and things stay the same.

Maybe we console ourselves with incremental changes. But the results are often fleeting...and those incremental changes are fear and settling in disguise.

So...I invite you to answer these questions:

  • What do you want your career and life to look like in 2020?

  • How is that vision different from your life right now?

Zooming out brings into sharp view what's working well...and what you need to change up.

You don't need to wait another 5 months to discover that the path you're on now is most likely not going to get you where you want to go.

Close your eyes. Imagine what your career and life will look like in a year's time if things continue along their current trajectory. Like what you see?

If you love what you saw, great! Keep doing it.

Unfortunately, at this time next year, most people will be in pretty much the same spot (or worse). And they'll be one year older. Only in hindsight do they see how far along they'd be if only they'd started sooner.

Once you realize your current path is not going to lead you to your 2020 vision, you can take strategic action. Starting today, not some random date sometime in the nebulous future.

If you're serious about making a change, there's so much you can do now to position yourself for success:

  • Crushing the limiting beliefs that are holding you back (like waiting until Jan 1 to start!)

  • Starting habits and routines that will actually pull you toward your 2020 vision in an energizing, manageable way

  • Reactivating and building key relationships, so you can leverage them with ease once you're ready to move

  • Building a plan and taking steps that will start giving you the purpose and fulfillment you crave--and give you real-life proof that what you want is possible

It's July 31. Imagine how far along you'll be 5 months from now if you take a few minutes, ask yourself these questions, and get R-E-A-L with yourself about putting yourself on a path to what you want starting TODAY.

Not convinced? I'd love to hear what's stopping you. Start by sharing your 2020 vision in the comments below.

Happy new year!!
